El vencedor de la viruela: Edward Jenner (1749-1823)

RESUMEN

A finales del siglo XVIII, Edward Jenner, un joven médico rural, no podía imaginar que desde Berkeley, en el suroeste de Inglaterra, gracias a su observación y a su empeño, la viruela, una de las mayores plagas que ha sufrido la humanidad desde tiempos remotos, llegaría a ser erradicada. John Hunter, su maestro en Londres, incentivó su inquietud: “investigue, investigue…”
Cuando el día 8 de mayo de 1980, la 33ª Asamblea Mundial de la Salud declaraba solemnemente la erradicación de la enfermedad, se cumplía aquella profecía del presidente Jefferson: “Las naciones futuras solo conocerán por la historia que existió la abominable viruela y que usted logró erradicarla”.

ABSTRACT

In the late eighteenth century, Edward Jenner, a young country doctor, could never have imagined that from Berkeley, in the southwest of England, thanks to his observation and endeavour , smallpox, one of the greatest plagues that mankind has ever suffered since ancient times, would be eradicated. John Hunter, his teacher in London, spurred on his inquisitiveness: "research, investigate ..."
When on 8th May 1980, the 33rd World Health Organisation Assembly solemnly declared the eradication of the disease, the prophecy of President Jefferson was fulfilled: “Future nations will know by history only that the loathsome smallpox has existed and by you has been extirpated."
